This opera of Richard Strauss is so challenging to stage that complete performances are still exceptionally rare, though Strauss himself regarded the work as his “Magic Flute”. Members of the production team are joined in this workshop by the critic, Peter Conrad, and the translator Eric Crozier. Gilbert Deflo, recently appointed Director of Productions at the Theatre Monnaie, Brussels, will be making his British debut.

The first screening in Britain of the film of Felsenstein’s famous production, which received 218 performances at the Komische Opera, should make a fascinating comparison with WNO’s new production.
8pm Workshop session
Joachim Herz, Felsenstein’s successor as Director of the Komische Opera (and guest producer of WNO’s “Madam Butterfly” is joined by Nicholas Pavne in a discussion of the Felsenstein’s ——–realistic music Theatre” which has influenced many of the best international producers of opera including Joachim Herz, Harry Kupfer and Gotz Friedrich.
